Life of Pi is one of those rare cinematic masterpieces, where the imagery is just as crucial as the story itself. Ang Lee outdid himself by creating this novel into a ferocious vivid film of survival. But underneath the story, lies a motif of animal behavior; how in times of chaos, humans let go of humanity. Which is ironic, seeing as the main character’s—Pi’s—main lesson is learning how difficult it is to let go. Lee creates his vision not only through his characters, but the breathtaking imagery of nature. The bright colors of the ocean; the desperation of the animals; the insatiable hope of Pi; are all brilliantly traced in this artistic work. Like Pi’s determination to survive, you can witness Lee’s dedication to his craft. And the end result, for both Pi and Lee, was magically captivating. A
